Liposuction Risks

The results from a liposuction procedure can be exciting, but every surgery has risks. For patients with medical problems, including diabetes, heart or lung disease, or bad blood circulation, liposuction has a greater risk of complication. The cosmetic surgeon will review the potential risks, as well as consider the individual patient’s medical history prior to the liposuction. The greater number of areas that a patient is having liposuction performed on and the larger the amount of fat that you wish to remove, the greater the risk of complications because it increases the operation time.

Because an anesthetic is administered, a reaction or complication to it is a risk. Liposuction is considered a lot safer when a local anesthesia is used. Any bleeding or infection is possible as well, and a blood accumulation under the skin. Most patients experience a feeling of skin numbness following liposuction that will subside in most cases, but in some cases the decreased sensation will continue. Things like a wrinkled skin appearance of a type of dimple may appear but there are treatments that can normally reduce these problems.

Other liposuction risks include, fat or blood clots, friction burns, fluid accumulation that may need to be drained, damage to skin or nerves, and damage to organs. Some patients will experience a change in skin pigmentation after liposuction.
